Backstreet Boys were in Japan recently and made numerous media appearances promoting their new album DNA, meeting with fans and performing new songs and classic hits on Japanese TV. The popular boy band performed a medley of their Grammy-nominated single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and their lasting Japanese karaoke favorite “I Want It That Way” live on Music Station, collaborated with DA PUMP’s Issa on Music Fair, and even performed live on the morning show Sukkiri during their stay.

DNA, the veteran group’s ninth studio album and first new set in five years, was released last week in Japan and bows at No. 1 on the latest Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart - - which combines physical and digital sales as well as look-ups, tracking the number of times a CD is ripped to a computer - - dated Jan. 21 to 27. The set topped two metrics of the chart’s methodology, selling 26,210 CDs in its first week to lead physical sales, while also ruling downloads with 3,644 units sold.

The album lacked momentum in look-ups (No. 21) but gained more download points than the long-running hits POP VIRUS by Gen Hoshino and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack, which powered the five-member band’s new set to the top spot.

Backstreet Boys also score another top 20 album this week as their Greatest Hits -  Chapter One from 2016 jumps 29-17 on the Japan Hot Albums tally.
