Disney star Olivia Rodrigo has swept charts all across the globe with her first ever single “drivers license”, beating out big names like Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and more. On top of this magnificent feat, the 17 year old now holds Spotify’s record for the highest number of single-day streams ever for a non-Christmas song, peaking at 17 million streams in a single day.

Olivia may be an unknown name to most prior to the track, with her credits mostly in acting. She made her start as a child actress in commercials, and soon found herself co-starring in "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series", which is only available for streaming on Disney+. The surprise hit song- which she co-wrote with producer Dan Nigro, was her first solo song after working on the show’s soundtrack, and is rumoured to reference the actress’ behind-the-scenes romances while starring on the Disney series.

The lyrics portray a story of a girl finally getting her driver’s licence while her boyfriend has now moved on to someone else. Olivia herself has said that she wrote the song after “driving around my neighbourhood, actually listening to really sad songs and crying in the car.” an image which was clearly depicted in “driver’s license.”

The relatable teenage melancholic love-story is almost reminiscent of earlier works by Taylor Swift, which Olivia has named as one of her biggest idols and inspirations.

Following Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus, she is the latest star to break out from Disney, although she already did have a massive following of 3.5 million on Tik Tok prior to the release, she should be finding herself thrown into a bigger limelight following the success of her music. New fans can also rejoice, as the track is undoubtedly only a start to other hits that Olivia will release in the future.

Tune in to our Hot 100 station to hear this record-breaking track!
